Jowai, Nov 29: The death of an Under Trial Prisoner (UTP) at the District Jail and Correctional Home in Jowai has raised serious concerns, with the family of the deceased demanding for an inquiry into the matter.

The prisoner, identified as Tenmiki Siangshai from Wapungskur in East Jaiñtia Hills, passed away on Thursday afternoon under circumstances that remain unclear.

According to reports, Siangshai was brought to Jowai Civil Hospital in Ialong, where he was declared “brought dead”. Jail authorities informed his family of the incident on November 28 at approximately 4:38 PM.

However, family members of the deceased have urged the government to launch an investigation to determine the exact cause and location of his death. Questions have arisen regarding the events leading up to his demise, including his condition prior to being transported to the hospital.

Sources from the prison claimed that Siangshai was conscious but weak and unable to speak when he was taken to the hospital.

All formalities were completed at Jowai Civil Hospital, and the body was handed over to the family on Friday.
