RI-Bhoi, September 28: The Ri-Bhoi district police have appealed to the public for help in identifying an unidentified man who was found dead at a petrol pump in Mawsmai on September 25.
According to police, the Office of the Superintendent of Police, Ri-Bhoi, received information about the incident at around 8.30 am from Jaswan Singh, manager of the NES Bharat Petrol Pump at 12th Mile, Mawsmai.
Police said a fuel dispenser at the petrol pump, Ranjan Kumar, had seen the man sleeping near the toilet area at around 2 am. When Kumar tried to wake him at around 5.30 am, the man was found unresponsive.
Preliminary enquiries suggest that the deceased was a rag picker who regularly collected recyclable materials in the area. Local villagers and the village Headman were also unable to identify him. Police said no matching missing person report had been registered at Byrnihat Police Station.
The body has been shifted to Civil Hospital, Nongpoh, for post-mortem examination. It has been preserved at the hospital mortuary pending identification and being claimed by relatives.
The deceased is believed to be a man aged between 55 and 60 years. He was around 5 feet 4 inches tall and had a thin build. He had a dusky or brownish complexion, short grey or black-grey hair and a grey moustache with beard or stubble.
At the time he was found, he was wearing a light blue or grey T-shirt with printed lettering on the front and a checked lungi.
Police have appealed to anyone who may know the deceased or his relatives to come forward.
