Uncles among three held for alleged murder of nephew in Eastern West Khasi Hills

Shillong, Feb. 12: In a shocking incident reported from Nongthymmai village in Eastern West Khasi Hills district, a young man is suspected to have been murdered by his uncles, with the body allegedly dismembered and disposed of in a river nearby.

Mairang Police on Wednesday have arrested three persons, including two uncles of the victim, in connection with the case.

The victim has been identified as Kerang Sawkmie, who had reportedly left home on February 6, to work in a nearby forest but did not return. Concerned family members began searching for him and, after failing to locate him, lodged an FIR at Mairang Police Station on February 9.

According to family members, police subsequently arrested three suspects, including the victim’s two maternal uncles and one associate. During interrogation, one of the accused allegedly confessed to the crime, stating that the victim was killed and his body disposed of in a deep gorge located within Nongthymmai village.

On February 10, police teams visited the suspected crime scene to conduct investigations and collect evidence, while a Forensic Crime Scene Unit also carried out examinations at the site. Personnel of the Search and Rescue Team (SRT) conducted search operations by entering the deep pool in an attempt to recover the body.

Despite multiple attempts by divers, the body has not yet been recovered. Search operations continued till today to locate the remains of the victim.
