Tura, May 22: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday aid the foundation stones for a series of urban infrastructure projects worth nearly ₹150 crore in Tura, in one of the biggest urban development pushes for the town ahead of the 39th National Games 2027.

The projects include redevelopment of the Najing Bazar area, construction of a multi-level parking and cinema complex at Dakopgre, and refurbishment of the SMELC building along with an Art and Culture Promenade, museum spaces, youth and elderly care centres, and recreational facilities.
The programme was attended by the Chief Executive Member of GHADC, MDCs, Tura Municipal Board Chairman J.D. Sangma, senior Urban Affairs officials, community leaders, artists and local residents.
Addressing the gathering, Sangma said the ongoing urban interventions are aligned with Tura’s strategic preparedness for the 39th National Games 2027, positioning the town as a destination for sports, tourism, and economic activity. He said improved infrastructure, clean corridors, walkable districts, and cultural identity-driven design will define the visitor experience during the event and beyond.
Among the major projects unveiled was the ₹60.76-crore Najing Bazar Redevelopment Project, which will include truck and car parking facilities, a hotel with around 70 beds, a banquet hall, nearly 200 shops and expanded vendor infrastructure.
Officials said the project is designed to increase market capacity while ensuring that the livelihoods of existing vendors are not disrupted during implementation.
The Chief Minister also laid the foundation for the ₹51.21-crore Multi-Level Car Parking and Cinema Complex at Dakopgre. The facility will accommodate around 200 vehicles and include three cinema halls, gaming zones and a food court.
The government said the project is expected to ease congestion in the town while creating new recreational and commercial spaces.
In addition, the government announced the refurbishment of the SMELC building, which will include an Art and Culture Promenade, museum spaces, a kid zone park, a CM Youth Centre and an Active Ageing Centre for senior citizens.
Sangma also launched the Tura Municipal Board mobile application to improve civic service delivery and citizen engagement. He announced that CM Connect Offices will be set up across all 56 blocks in Meghalaya to provide easier access to public services and grievance redressal.
“People should not have to travel all the way to district headquarters for basic services,” the Chief Minister said, adding that the government is gradually moving towards complete digitisation of citizen services.
He said the CM Connect 1971 helpline is being strengthened as a real-time grievance redressal system where complaints are monitored directly through the Chief Minister’s office for quicker resolution.
The event also featured the distribution of cheques to artists under the Chief Minister Artists Engagement Scheme, which aims to promote murals, street art and public space beautification while generating livelihood opportunities for local artists.
As part of the urban cleanliness initiative, locality-wise waste management grading awards were presented to top-performing areas. The government also announced installation of 552 smart LED streetlights at a cost of ₹6.51 crore and expansion of CCTV surveillance infrastructure with nearly 500 cameras across Tura to improve public safety.
Sangma said the ongoing projects are aligned with preparations for the National Games 2027 and are intended to position Tura as a destination for sports, tourism and economic activity.
A key highlight of the programme was the CM Connect Session, where citizens directly raised grievances and development-related concerns before the Chief Minister and senior officials.
