Agartala, Sept 29: In a major crackdown against drug trafficking, the East Agartala police in collaboration with the College Tilla police outpost successfully seized marijuana (Ganja) worth Rs. 75 lakhs, which was being taken to Meghalaya.
After getting specific input, police intercepted a 12-wheeler truck and, after search, a hidden chamber containing a large quantity of marijuana were seized.
“We received credible information about contraband being smuggled in the truck. Acting swiftly, officers detained the vehicle at a police checkpoint. Although the truck appeared empty, a secret compartment had been constructed within the vehicle, designed specifically to conceal illicit goods. With the help of a mechanic, the hidden chamber was opened, revealing 45 packets of dry ganja weighing 355 kilograms. The estimated market value of the seized ganja is around Rs. 75 lakh,” said an police official.
The truck driver, identified as 33-year-old Mithun Karmakar, has been arrested.
During preliminary interrogation, Karmakar revealed that he was transporting the consignment to Meghalaya.
