TURA, 19 Feb: The top leadership of the Congress has stated that elections in Meghalaya and Garo Hills will be directly between them and the NPP while the West Bengal party Trinamool Congress is fast disappearing into the horizon after losing steam in the ongoing campaign.

All India Congress Committee national general secretary Mukul Wasnik told mediapersons in Williamnagar on February 18 that the initial aggressive campaigning by Mamata Banerjee’s All India Trinamool Congress led by Mukul Sangma has suddenly runout of steam 9 days before polling and people were realizing that the ultimate fight would be between Congress and the NPP, and not the Trinamool.

Indicating that the Trinamool Congress’ tall claims of winning the upcoming elections was merely “a hype”, Mukul Wasnik questioned where are the voters who will bring them to power.

“The people who supported the Congress party in 2018 and elected them still remain with us unlike the leaders who went for the lust of power. There were no ideological differences whatsoever,” said Congress leader Mukul Wasik as he accused Mukul Sangma and the 11 other Congress turncoats of putting self-interest before the interest of the people.

“They (Mukul) have gone and joined a party that has its base only in West Bengal with no connection at all in Meghalaya or the north east. Wherever they have tried to set up base outside Bengal they have got no support from the people. Major effort they made was in Goa but failed there as well. We don’t know how long they can sustain their efforts and may even pull out before voting takes place,” believes AICC leader Mukul Wasnik.

He also accused the rivals of the Congress of trying to piggy ride on the secular credentials of the Congress.

“Neither the Trinamool Congress nor the NPP or even he UDP has the right to claim the secular credentials like the Indian National Congress because all of them have been part of a government and shared power with the BJP that is against secularism,” says Mukul Wasnik as he questions Mukul Sangma and the Trinamool when they try to attack the BJP and forget they are part of the same group.

He asked the people of Garo Hills to be cautious of the BJP which, according to him, is destroying the secular fabric and democracy of the country.
