Nongpoh, June 6: Three kidnapping victims from Meghalaya Ri Bhoi managed to escape from their captors, who had demanded ₹7 lakh for their release. The incident occurred on the evening of June 4 in Assam.
According to the Ri Bhoi District Police, a complaint was received from Kirit Dohtdong of Mawlang village, who reported that her spouse, Iohborlang Kharsatia, along with two friends, Kostrarwel Jyrwa and Samsul Ali, had been kidnapped by an unknown group while they were in Guwahati to purchase a JCB (excavator). She received a phone call from her spouse’s number, with the kidnappers demanding over ₹7 lakh for their safe release.
Upon receiving the information, the Ri Bhoi District Police launched an operation on June 5 by tracking the phone number and pinpointing the location to the Nalbari area of Assam. The Nalbari Police Station was alerted, and around 3 PM, the Mukulmua Police Station in Assam reported that two suspects, Samsul Hoque and Abdul Aziz of Kaplabori, Nalbari District, had been arrested. They were found with a Maruti Ignis vehicle. During interrogation, the suspects confessed to their involvement in the crime and provided information about other accomplices.
Following these leads, the Ri Bhoi District Police, in coordination with the Assam Police, set up a naka checking at Tihu, Assam. During the check, the three victims managed to escape by jumping out of the vehicle when the kidnappers tried to reverse upon seeing the police checkpoint.
The three victims were taken to Tihu Police Station, and the investigation into the kidnapping case is ongoing.
