Tura, July 5: The prices of chillies and other vegetables has reached an alarming level in the Tura market, causing significant concern among the people. The sudden surge in prices has seen chillies being sold for as high as Rs. 250-300 per kilogram, compared to the previous price of Rs. 120 per kilogram.

The District Commissioner of West Garo Hills has acknowledged the situation and assured the public that he is actively looking into the matter. The local administration is closely monitoring the price hike and is expected to provide updates on the issue soon.

The rise in chilli prices is not limited to Tura alone, as other parts of the Garo Hills region are also experiencing similar price increases. Additionally, prices of other vegetables have also shot up and are expected to rise further.

In contrast to Tura, the price of chillies in Shillong remains relatively lower, ranging from Rs. 120 to 130 per kilogram.

The sudden spike in chilli prices has caught many consumers off guard and inflated household budgets. Local vendors and consumers are expressing their concerns over the steep increase, which has happened within a short period.

The price hike has been attributed to the heavy rainfall and floods in Assam and other parts of the country, which has destroyed chilli cultivation and other vegetables.

Previously, chillies were being sold at a reasonable price of Rs. 120 per kilogram. However, over the weekend, prices had skyrocketed to as high as Rs. 400 per kilogram, causing distress among buyers.

The rise in chilli prices has prompted discussions among traders, consumers, and local authorities to find ways to address the issue. Efforts are being made to identify the factors contributing to the surge and to explore possible solutions to stabilize the market and ensure fair pricing.
