SIR exercise for Meghalaya 2026 to begin June 20, final electoral roll on Oct 7: CEO

SHILLONG, JUN 18: The Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls for Meghalaya will commence on June 20, with the final publication of the electoral roll scheduled for October 7, 2026, Chief Electoral Officer BDR Tiwari said on Wednesday.

Announcing the timeline as per the Election Commission of India’s schedule, Tiwari said the exercise would begin with an initial phase from June 20 to June 29, followed by door-to-door verification.

“The starting phase starting from 20 to 29 June, then 30 June till 29 July it will be house to house visit by booth level officers,” he said.

The draft electoral roll will be published on August 5, 2026, opening a window for public scrutiny. “Draft publication will be there on 5 August 2026 and after that from 5 August till 4 September 2026 the period will be for claims and objection,” the CEO stated.

The process will conclude with the final roll publication in October. “The final publication for the electoral roll will be on 7 October 2026, and qualifying date for SIR will be on 1 October 2026,” Tiwari said.

Asserting that the revision exercise is already underway, he added, “We are ongoing this SIR exercise, so this exercise will continue.”

Tiwari stressed that the revision would be carried out strictly as per the Commission’s mandate to ensure accuracy. “SIR will happen as per the schedule, as per the mandate and there will be no eligible voters will be included and no eligible voters will be left, our methods and machineries will ensure that,” he said.

The SIR aims to update the electoral rolls ahead of upcoming electoral processes by adding new eligible voters, deleting deceased or shifted names, and correcting entries through booth-level officer verification across the state.
