Shillong to enforce paid on-street parking from August 1; Govt notifies zones, rates

Shillong, July 4: The Meghalaya government has notified various locations in Shillong city for on-street parking and no-parking zones and fixed the rates for the same which will be effective from August 1.

This move is part of the state’s efforts to decongest the city and regulate parking demand.

The notification in this regard will be implemented in various zones falling under the different traffic branches that include Sadar, Madanrting, Laban, Mawlai, Rynjah, Lumdiengjri and Laitumkhrah.

This came after the department of Urban Affairs notified the Meghalaya Parking Policy for Urban Areas, 2025. The policy seeks to provide a comprehensive and sustainable framework for the regulation and management of parking in urban areas in the interest of decongesting Shillong city.

A notification issued Commissioner & Secretary in-charge Urban Affairs Dr Vijay Kumar on June 26 said Rs 20 for two wheeler and Rs 40 for four wheeler have been fixed as fees for on-street parking/per hour in high demand zone (or commercial areas) and Rs 15 for two wheeler and Rs 30 for four-wheeler in low demand zone (or non-commercial areas).

The department has constituted seven zonal task forces headed by Additional District Magistrates for the purpose of addressing parking management.

In consultation with the public works department (PWD) and dorbar shnongs, the zonal task forces have identified specific locations suitable for on-street parking.

The notification said that the period from the date of this notification till August 1 shall be utilized by the department and the zonal task forces to further streamline the modalities of fee collection and sharing of the revenue.

“Any unauthorized collection or deviation from the notified rates shall attract penalties as per applicable laws,” it warned.

The department will revise the parking fees or zone classifications from time to time based on periodic assessments.

The zonal task forces are also in consultation with the dorbar shnongs to finalize the modalities for collection of parking fee. Additionally, mechanisms for integration of technology for collection of parking fees is being discussed in partnership with GiZ.

This notification shall remain in force until further orders.
