SHILLONG, AUG 23: East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal on Sunday said heavy security deployment across Shillong city will continue in the wake of the August 19 violence.
“That is why you see all these patrolling and the considerably larger presence of security deployment across the city and we will continue that unless and until the citizens of Shillong feel safe and secure,” Baranwal said.
He also appealed to tourists not to judge the city by one isolated incident, after reports that many are cancelling their trips.
“I have also received multiple messages from across the country wherein they are saying don’t go to Shillong. The only message I have given them is please come to Shillong, it is entirely safe, don’t judge a city because of one isolated incident,” he said.
“The people of Shillong and East Khasi Hills welcome them with open arms and they are most welcome as tourists and Shillong is an important tourist destination across the country and globe. We want them here and we want to welcome them,” he added.
The DC assured that the district administration is committed to ensure safety of tourists.
“Please don’t judge Shillong by one incident. We are here from the district administration to ensure their safety and security. The Tourism department has also given its dedicated helpline number for all tourists and we are always there for whatever assistance is needed,” he said.
