Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said that seat-sharing discussions between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) are almost finalised, with a formal announcement expected soon.

Taking to X, Sarma said, “The seat-sharing discussions between BJP and AGP are almost finalised and we will formally announce it in the coming days. Together, Team NDA will seek the blessings of the people of Assam.”

Speaking to reporters later, the Chief Minister said the primary discussions had already concluded. “The seat-sharing talks between BJP and AGP are almost finalised. BJP state president Dilip Saikia and minister Jayanta Malla Baruah have been holding discussions with the AGP. When Union Home Minister Amit Shah decides to conclude the discussions, we will wrap them up immediately. The primary seat-sharing talks are already over,” Sarma said.

AGP president Atul Bora had earlier said that the party would prioritise seats where its candidates have a strong chance of winning and reaffirmed AGP’s commitment to continue as a key BJP ally within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the upcoming Assembly elections.

While declining to specify the number of seats AGP would contest, Bora said the party has strengthened its organisational base in several constituencies and noted that some MLAs from the minority community have recently expressed willingness to join AGP.

Both parties have decided to contest the upcoming Assembly elections together and have stepped up organisational meetings and coordination efforts.

With just over two months to go before the election schedule is announced, the BJP and its long-time ally AGP appear to be moving cautiously, signalling unity while balancing their respective organisational interests.
