SHILLONG, NOV 5: In a show of protest, members of the North-Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) and the Khasi Students’ Union-NEHU Unit (KSU-NEHU Unit) locked the office of the University’s Vice Chancellor on Tuesday, opposing the proposed holding of the 193rd Executive Committee meeting in New Delhi.

In a letter addressed to the NEHU Pro-VC Prof Sumarbin Umdor, the student bodies said that the proposed EC meeting violates the Ministry of Education’s directive to conduct statutory meetings within the university campus.

The unions have declared a non-cooperation movement against Vice-Chancellor Prof PS Shukla, citing his prolonged absence, neglect of student welfare, and failure to ensure democratic engagement.

They claim that the Vice-Chancellor has been absent from the university for approximately 354 days, disrupting administrative functioning and delaying academic decisions.

The students’ unions also point out that NEHU is facing financial constraints, with a reduced non-salary allocation, and question the justification of allocating funds for an EC meeting in New Delhi. They view the meeting as an attempt to bypass accountability and exclude student representation.

The unions have stated that any decisions or resolutions arising from the meeting will not be recognized or accepted by the student community, and demand that the EC meeting be conducted within the university premises with transparency, accountability, and participation of all stakeholders.
