SHILLONG, NOV 19: Minister in-charge Public Health Engineering (PHE) Marcuise N Marak on Wednesday announced the successful commissioning and testing of the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme (GSWSS) Phase‑III.
Speaking at the site, Marak said the project, sanctioned in 2008, has finally reached operational stage after 17 years.
“The project was sanctioned in the year 2008 and today, in November 2025, we are commissioning and testing it,” Marak said.

“With this commissioning, we are adding another 8 million litres per day (MLD) to the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme for Shillong city.”
He added that Stage I of the pumping system had already been commissioned and tested successfully, and the ceremony marked the commencement of Stage II, which will pump water to the treatment plant at Mawphlang.

Marak also thanked Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma for sincerely reviewing this project and supporting the department in every angle.
“I express my thanks to former Chief Secretary D P Wahlang, who was actively working on this project and with his support, we were able to procure some of the lands which were having hindrance in completing the project,” he said adding “I am very grateful to inform everyone that today we are able to commission and test the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme (GSWSS) Phase‑III. I would like to thank the entire team of chief engineer, commissioner & secretary and all the concerned officers who have been working tirelessly here.”

Marak also acknowledged the contributions of the former Chief Engineer of PHE and all stakeholders whose persistent efforts enabled the project’s completion.
The additional 8 MLD capacity is expected to significantly improve water supply reliability for residents of Shillong.
