Shillong, Dec 13: Amidst the ongoing tension between India and Bangladesh, hundreds of protesters under the banner of the All Meghalaya Citizen Conscious Forum (AMCCF) took to the streets in Shillong on Friday to condemn the atrocities against minorities in Bangladesh.
The protest rally began from Mawbah point and culminated at Rhino point.
The protesters shouted slogans of “Bharat Mata ki Jai” as a solidarity with the oppressed minorities as well as to protest against the Bangladesh government. Raju Paul, convenor of the forum, informed that a memorandum would be submitted to the interim head of the Bangladesh government Muhammad Yunus, a Nobel Peace Prize-winning economist through the DC of East Khasi Hills, outlining their demands.
Paul condemned the acts of violence against Hindus and minorities in Bangladesh, terming them “inhumane”. The protest rally was a show of solidarity with the minority communities in Bangladesh, who have been facing persecution and violence.
“Ever since the change of regime which took place in August in Bangladesh, we have seen many brutal violence taking place against the minorities which includes our tribal brothers who are there, which includes our Christian brothers, which incudes our Hindu brothers and also the Buddhist community that are there. They are facing brutal violence by the extremists,” he said.
The ongoing unrest in Bangladesh started with student-led protests against a quota system, which many deemed unfair, which led to the ouster of Sheikh Hasina as the Prime Minister of the country earlier this year.
After Hasina fled the country, the persecution of the minorities in the country have failed to stop despite calls from several quarters to stop the atrocities. Due to the continued violence, especially against the Hindus, ties between India and Bangladesh have also been strained.
Earlier this week, a surveillance drone was seen near the international border with Meghalaya, which was controlled from Bangladesh soil.
