Guwahati, Oct 3: In a major crackdown, Assam Police arrested over 800 people on Tuesday in a special operation that began in the early hours of dawn.
According to reports, Assam Police carried out raids in multiple locations of Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Dhubri, Gossaigaon, Serfanguri, Kachugaon, Bogoribari in Kokrajhar.
Taking to X, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, “In a massive crackdown against child marriage, Assam Police has arrested over 800 accused persons in a special operation which began in the early hours of dawn. The number of arrests is likely to rise.”
This crackdown comes days after, Assam CM had announced that the state government will be re-launching its campaign against child marriage in Assam.
He had said that Assam police will arrest around 2000-3,000 men over the next 10 days in the state.
In September, Assam police had detained 17 fake “qazis” in different operations in Hailakandi district of Assam.
In February this year, Assam Police arrested at least 2,666 people in connection with cases related to child marriages in Assam.
