Shillong, Nov 28: Following the decision to stop supply of oil and petroleum products to Meghalaya by the North East Petroleum Mazdoor Union (NEPMU) alleging harassment by Meghalaya Police in Ri Bhoi district, Minister in-charge Food Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs Department, Comingone Ymbon, on Tuesday asked people of the state not to panic as the state has sufficient stock of petrol and diesel.

As the same time, he said a meeting has been called between the members of the union and the government, which will be held at Nongpoh on Wednesday, to resolve the issues.

The Minister assured that the meeting will resolve the issues and there won’t be any breakage of supply. He further informed that the petrol pumps have sufficient stock for 2-3 days. In case the meeting is unfruitful and the strike lasts beyond 2-3 days, the respective Deputy Commissioners will be asked to regulate petrol and diesel supply within their jurisdictions.

The NEPMU has decided to halt the supply of IOCL, BPCL, and HPCL petroleum products to Meghalaya starting from November 29, 2023 (Wednesday), alleging mistreatment of oil tanker drivers and helpers by Meghalaya Police personnel in Ri Bhoi district (commencing from 18th Mile) since November 24, under the pretext of malpractices.

It also claimed that the oil tankers’ drivers and helpers are being physically torture by police. Due to this, the union said the tankers are afraid to go to Meghalaya, particularly Khasi Hills region.
