Shillong, March 13: The state government has no plan to set up a scientific landfill site at Mawkhanu village under the New Shillong Township.
“The government is not contemplating to set up of scientific landfill site in the location,” Deputy Chief Minister in-charge urban affairs Sniawbhalang Dhar said while replying in the Assembly on Thursday.
VPP legislator from Mawlai Brightstar Marbaniang has suggested the need for the government to develop a waste management plan for Mawkhanu. According to him, the government had acquired land up to 800 acres at Mawkhanu.
To this, Dhar said the reason why government is not setting up the landfill at Mawkhanu because it has proposed a new land at Nonghali adding the area required for setting up of the landfill site is approximately 100-150 acres.
Further, the deputy chief minister informed that there is no plan to convert the land into a European ward adding that the government is still preparing the master plan.
He also replied that there is no illegal settlers at Mawhanu area while assuring the VPP legislator from Nongkrem Ardent M Basiawmoit that he is ready to conduct inspection to the area.
