SHILLONG, AUG 28: The Meghalaya government is ascertaining if any residents of the state are stranded in flood-affected Nepal, Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home, Prestone Tynsong, said on Friday.

No such case has been reported till now, he said.

Tynsong also condoled the loss of lives in Nepal.

“It is very unfortunate. Our condolences go to the whole of Nepal,” he said.

On whether anyone from Meghalaya is caught in the situation, Tynsong said, “We have not got any information. I have already instructed the Chief Secretary and the DGP to find out if any resident of Meghalaya happens to be there. Till this moment, there is no information.”

Asserting that the state is prepared to handle any emergency, he said Meghalaya remains fully prepared for any eventuality, whether in the state or elsewhere in the country.

On the chronic waterlogging at Jorabat during rains, Tynsong said the stretch falls under the NHAI and not the state Public Works Department.

He said NHAI is responsible for maintenance and construction of the road and should have done a detailed survey of the road level before taking up the work.

“I have held a meeting with NHAI officials and told them to conduct a detailed survey again and take necessary action, because even with minor rain, the road gets choked with flood water,” he said.

The Deputy Chief Minister stressed that the issue is not under the purview of the state government.
