Kohima, July 28: The investigation into the explosion at Khopanala in Chümoukedima village earlier this month has been handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), with the Centre citing the case’s national security implications.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Nagaland Police said the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), through a communication dated July 27, directed the NIA to take over the investigation into the July 13 blast, which was initially registered at Chümoukedima Police Station.

According to the Office of the Director General of Police, the Central Government concluded that the incident involved a “scheduled offence” under the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008, warranting a federal probe.

The MHA invoked its powers under Section 6(5) read with Section 8 of the NIA Act to transfer the investigation, citing the gravity of the offence and its implications for national security.

Nagaland Police said the state government and the police department would coordinate with the NIA to facilitate the transfer of the case in accordance with legal procedures.

The explosion at Khopanala on July 13 had triggered a police investigation, but authorities have so far not disclosed details about the nature of the blast or those involved.
Further details are expected once the NIA begins its investigation.
