NEW DELHI, Nov 26: Acting swiftly on the Union Ministry of Home Affairs’ (MHA) directive, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has launched thorough investigations into three major cases related to the recent surge of violence in Manipur. The cases, re-registered by the NIA on November 13, 2024, aim to unearth the larger conspiracy behind these brutal attacks.
The anti-terror agency is probing three distinct cases under the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, Arms Act, 1959, and other relevant laws.
The first case (RC-15/2024/NIA/IMP) stems from the November 11 attack in Borobekra, where armed militants opened fire at the police station and set several houses and shops ablaze in Jakuradhor Karong. The attack left two civilians dead and led to the abduction and murder of six others, including three women and three children.
Security forces retaliated, resulting in a heavy exchange of fire. During subsequent search operations, two charred bodies were discovered in the ruins of the burned houses. This case was originally registered as FIR No. 29(11) at Borobekra PS.
The second case (RC-14/2024/NIA/IMP) involves a coordinated militant attack on the CRPF post at Jakuradhor Karong and Borobekra Police Station on the same day. A CRPF constable was injured in the assault and evacuated for treatment. Security forces recovered the bodies of unidentified militants along with arms and ammunition during a subsequent search.
This case, initially registered as FIR No. 30(11) at Borobekra PS, highlights the increasing targeting of security forces in the region.
The third case (RC-13/2024/NIA/IMP) concerns the horrific murder of 31-year-old Zosangkim in Jiribam on November 7. Armed militants reportedly raped her and set her ablaze in her residence. A mother of three, her death has drawn widespread outrage. The case, first registered as FIR No. 80(11)2024 at Jiribam PS, is being investigated under the BNS, Arms Act, and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
NIA teams visited the crime scenes on November 21-22, 2024, to initiate their probe. The agency is currently in the process of obtaining case documents from local police to advance the investigations.
