SHILLONG, DEC 30: The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO), a coalition of student unions from eight states, has demanded capital punishment for the perpetrators behind the brutal killing of Angel Chakma, a 24-year-old student from Tripura.
In a memorandum to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Tuesday, NESO chairman Samuel Jyrwa said, “NESO vehemently condemns such atrocities perpetrated against the North East people.”

He reminded the Chief Minister that such harassment is a recurring threat to students and residents from the region across India.
“(We)demand capital punishment to the perpetrators of the heinous crime at the earliest and establishment of at least one special police station dedicated for deaing with cases related t racial discrimination and atrocities on NE people,” Jyrwa said while further demanding the immediate enactment of a stringent Anti‑Racism Act to address racial hate crimes.

Chakma was brutally beaten and stabbed in Dehradun on December 9, 2025 and succumbed to his injuries on December 26 after a two‑week hospital battle.
His brother, Michael Chakma, was also assaulted in the same incident.
NESO highlighted that the attack was racially motivated, noting that the victims were targeted for looking “different” from the majority Aryan population and were subjected to demeaning racial slurs.
