Shillong, June 20: The North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) has suspended senior Professor of Zoology and Dean of School of Life Sciences Nirmalendu Saha following his recent arrest by the central bureau of investigation (CBI) for Rs 3.43 lakh bribery.
“With regards to Prof. N. Saha’s case, according to rules and regulations, he is deemed suspended after 48 hours of custody with CBI. After receiving the communication from CBI, the university is issuing the suspension letter to Prof. Saha,” NEHU PRO said in a statement issued on Friday.
On June 12, the CBI, Guwahati has arrested Professor of Zoology and Dean of School of Life Sciences, North Eastern Hill University, Shillong and a private person (Proprietor of a firm) of Guwahati, Assam during transaction of undue advantage / bribe of Rs. 3.43 Lakh at Guwahati University Guest House, Guwahati.
A case was registered by CBI on 11.06.2025 against the said accused Nirmalendu Saha, Professor of Zoology and Dean of School of Life Sciences, North Eastern Hill University, Shillong, and Pranjal Sharma R/o Bishnu Rabha Path, Beltola, Guwahati, Assam – on the basis of a source information to the effect that the accused private person (Proprietor of a firm) while acting in collusion with the Professor of Zoology and Dean of School of Life Sciences, North Eastern Hill University, Shillong, Meghalaya and unknown others indulged in corrupt and illegal practices and in pursuance thereof facilitating the said accused professor to obtain undue advantage against award of supply orders of scientific equipments, laboratory items etc. and clearance of bills thereof.
CBI laid a trap and caught the accused red-handed. The arrested accused will be produced before the Competent Court at Guwahati today i.e.12.06.2025.
