SHILLONG, MAY 21: The North Eastern Council (NEC) sanctioned three major projects in Meghalaya worth over ₹33.85 crore during 2025-26, covering urban infrastructure, entrepreneurship development, and education.

The flagship initiative is the re-alignment of pipelines and urban beautification along the main approach road to Iewduh Market in Shillong.
Described as a comprehensive infrastructure project, it is aimed at “improving utility management, sanitation, waste management, lighting, and overall urban aesthetics” around what NEC called “one of Asia’s largest indigenous markets and a major cultural and commercial hub of Meghalaya.”

The Council also sanctioned an Integrated Entrepreneurship and Livelihood Centre targeting “tribal youths, women entrepreneurs, and farmers.”

The facility is intended to strengthen skill development, entrepreneurship, and market linkages, promoting inclusive economic empowerment across communities.

In the education sector, NEC has supported the construction of the RK Mission School at Sohra under the Focused Development of Deprived Areas programme.

The project seeks to strengthen “educational infrastructure in one of Meghalaya’s historically significant regions.”

The three sanctions in 2025-26 cover critical sectors such as urban infrastructure, entrepreneurship development, and education, NEC stated.

The North Eastern Council functions as the regional planning body for the eight northeastern states under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region.
