Nagaland: 8 killed, 2 critically injured in road mishap

Kohima, Sept 21: In a tragic incident, at least eight persons were killed while two others were critically injured in a road mishap in Nagaland’s Tseminyu district on Wednesday.

According to reports, the incident took place when a speeding truck collided head-on with a Tata Sumo vehicle carrying around eight passengers between the Usha and Seneu areas of the district.

“Eight passengers of the Tata Sumo vehicle bearing registration number NL02-T-2124, including the driver, died on the spot after it fell into a deep roadside gorge,” said a police official.

According to police, the Tata Sumo vehicle was on its way from Mokokchung to Kohima.

“The condition of the driver and handyman of the truck, which too toppled into the gorge, is stated to be critical,” police said.

The critically injured person was admitted to the hospital.

Meanwhile, police have started an investigation into the case.

Among the victims were three women who recently cleared the Nagaland Staff Selection Board (NSSB) examination and got appointment letters to join government service as grade-3 personnel.

The deceased include six women and two men, including the driver.

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, while condoling the deaths, announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased.
