Murder of teenage girl in Ri-Bhoi: JAC holds public rally & candlelight vigil; demands strongest punishment for the accused

Shillong, Sept 30: The Joint Action Committee (JAC) comprising of four frontal social organizations – Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Federation of Khasi Jaintia & Garo People (FKJGP), Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) and Ri Bhoi Youth Federation (RBYF) – on Friday organized a public rally and candle light vigil to protest and condemn the brutal murder of a teenager girl, which occurred on September 26 at Pahamsyiem village.


The public rally commenced from Iewmawlong village, the native village of the murdered victim identified as Nisha Nongbet, and culminated at Nongpoh Urban Shopping Complex where a public meeting and the candle light vigil was also organized. The rally was also participated by the heads of local villages, the seng longkmie and seng samla of nearby villages and school students.

Mentionably, on September 26, 2022, one teenager girl identified as Nisha Nongbet was allegedly brutally murdered by one Dilbahadur Thaba who is also accused of living with the victim for five months before the incident. Police arrested the accused person on the same day.

The public rally on Friday was attended by Ferdynald Kharkamni, president KSU – North Khasi Hills, Marcus Marten, president HNYF – Northern Region, Phrangsngi Kylla, Finance Secretary RBYF, Ricky Majaw President FKJGP – Nongpoh Circle, CB Syiem, Chairman Nongpoh Town Committee, Anthony Suchiang, Secretary of Nongpoh Dorbar Shnong among others.

Speaking at the public meeting, the leaders expressed grave concern over the rise in crimes against women in the district and also the atrocities meted out to the Khasi women from their non-tribal spouse.

The speakers also demanded the authority concerned to take stern action against the accused person and requested capital punishment for him.

The leaders also threatened that any person who stands with the accused for granting him bail will also be taken to account and be punished publicly.
