Imphal, April 7: Tension gripped Manipur on Tuesday after the death of two children injured in a bomb attack in Bishnupur district triggered widespread protests, clashes and a security crackdown, with authorities suspending internet services in five districts.
Public anger erupted following the deaths of two siblings—both aged five—who were critically injured in a suspected rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) attack at Tronglaobi. The incident sparked protests and road blockades in parts of Imphal, particularly at Sega Road and Konjeng Hajari Leikai, as residents demanded justice and stronger security measures.
In Bishnupur district, an enraged mob allegedly stormed a camp of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), accusing security personnel of failing to protect civilians. The situation escalated into a violent rampage, prompting security forces to open fire to bring the crowd under control. Several persons were injured in the firing and were rushed to hospitals in Imphal, sources said. Casualties are feared.
Authorities said the law and order situation remains volatile, with protests intensifying across affected areas.
Amid fears of further unrest, the Manipur Governor ordered the suspension of internet and mobile data services in Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching and Bishnupur districts. Officials said the move was aimed at preventing the spread of misinformation, inflammatory content and mobilisation through social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and X.
According to family members, the deceased children were Oinam Tomthin and his sister. Their mother, Pheiroijam Binita, a nurse who had recently returned from Guwahati, was also injured in the blast and remains in critical condition. Their father is currently serving in the Indian Army.
Officials said security has been tightened across sensitive areas even as tension continues to prevail, with locals demanding accountability and immediate steps to ensure civilian safety.
