SHILLONG, Sept 9: Meghalaya plans to expand its network of health Sub Centres to 700 by March 2027, with 200 more facilities scheduled to be completed during the period.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma reviewed the Health Department on Wednesday and took stock of health infrastructure projects being implemented across the State.

More than 110 Sub Centres have been completed in the past two years, while work on another 200 is targeted for completion by March next year. The expansion is expected to improve access to primary healthcare, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach areas.

Upgradation and construction work at health facilities in Bajengdoba, Byrnihat, Mahendraganj, Raksamgre and Mylliem Umthlong are nearing completion. The government plans to make these facilities operational by January 2027.

The 100-bed hospital at Resubelpara is also to be activated at the earliest.

The projects currently under construction or upgradation will add more than 600 beds to the State’s government healthcare capacity, which stands at around 7,000 beds. Meghalaya has invested about Rs 750 crore in health infrastructure over the past five years through various funding sources.

The government said the expansion comes alongside improvements in key health indicators. A recent report, Meghalaya’s Health Trends: Progress and Priorities, puts the decline in infant deaths at about 40 percent, from 3,064 in 2020-21 to 1,833 in 2025-26. Maternal deaths have fallen by about 57 percent over the same period.

Institutional deliveries have risen from 51.4 percent in NFHS-4 to 65.6 percent, reaching 79 percent in 2025-26. Full immunisation among children increased from 63.8 percent to 75.3 percent, while household health insurance coverage rose from 34.6 percent to 74.9 percent.

The government said the focus would now be on completing the ongoing projects and putting the new facilities into service.
