SHILLONG, DEC 3: Meghalaya government has launched a comprehensive State-wide Drug Use Survey, aimed at gathering data to inform evidence-based interventions for prevention, de-addiction, rehabilitation, and community support.

The survey, undertaken by Sankardev College, Shillong, in collaboration with the Drug User Community, will begin with a pilot in Shillong city and later expand to all districts of Meghalaya.

“Today’s event marks the signing of the MoU between DREAM Mission and Sankardev College, Shillong, a collaboration that strengthens the scientific and research-oriented response to the drug menace in the State,” DREAM Director Francis Kharshiing said on Wednesday.

He emphasized the importance of the survey, stating, “The findings will enable the Government to formulate more accurate, targeted, and evidence-based interventions for prevention, de-addiction, rehabilitation, and community support.”

The survey is a significant step in the Government’s mission to combat substance abuse and safeguard the future of Meghalaya’s youth.

The involvement of the Drug User Community, including MUF and MeduNet, reflects the Government’s commitment to empathy, dignity, and inclusion.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma reinforced the government’s resolve, emphasizing that the fight against drugs is a collective responsibility of the government, institutions, communities, and society at large.

“The government remains committed to: protecting young people from the threat of drugs,
providing support and pathways of recovery for those affected and empowering communities to take part in the solution,” the CM stated.
