Shillong, Feb 3: In a significant push to position Meghalaya on the global trade map, the State on Tuesday hosted the Northeast’s first-ever Reverse Buyer–Seller Meet (RBSM), bringing 28 international buyers from 16 countries face-to-face with over 100 local MSMEs.

Organised by the Department of Commerce and Industries in collaboration with the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) under the Centre’s RAMP Scheme, the two-day event at the State Convention Centre aims to strengthen export linkages and integrate Meghalaya’s MSMEs into global value chains.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, inaugurating the event, described it as a “proud moment” not just for Meghalaya but for the entire Northeast. He stressed that such initiatives must deliver measurable outcomes and long-term partnerships rather than remain symbolic engagements. “Nothing changes overnight,” he said, underscoring the need for sustained effort and consistency.

Citing the Meghalaya Livelihoods and Access to Markets Programme supported by IFAD, he noted how the project transformed from near closure to becoming one of IFAD’s globally recognised initiatives.

Highlighting reforms to improve the State’s business ecosystem, Sangma said Meghalaya has scrapped over 400 regulations—including nearly 70 labour-related provisions—and introduced a unified investor portal to streamline clearances.

He also pointed to value-added exports such as internationally certified pineapple shipments and turmeric processing by women’s self-help groups.

On the occasion, the Chief Minister launched the MeghaRise brand logo and a State-level MSME Portal aimed at strengthening branding, improving market visibility, and easing digital access for entrepreneurs.

Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar termed the meet a “historic occasion,” emphasising that the platform differs from conventional trade fairs by being buyer-driven and focused on structured B2B engagements. The participating buyers represent countries including South Africa, Canada, Australia, Russia, Kenya, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and Romania, spanning sectors such as agri-processing, handlooms, bamboo products, spices, textiles, and herbal wellness.

Chief Secretary Dr. Shakil P. Ahammed noted that Meghalaya operates in premium, niche segments with a strong focus on organic and sustainable production. Commissioner & Secretary Sanjay Goyal said MSMEs contribute nearly 45% to India’s exports but Meghalaya’s share remains modest, underscoring the growth potential.

FIEO representative Neha Mehra pointed to Meghalaya’s rise to 27th position in NITI Aayog’s Export Preparedness Index and reaffirmed support for capacity-building and export awareness initiatives.

The two-day event will conclude on February 4 with structured business meetings aimed at converting discussions into firm export orders—potentially marking a turning point in Meghalaya’s global trade ambitions.
