Shillong, Jan 27: The Meghalaya government has planned a significant event on February 16, where they will unveil a life-size statue and bust dedicated to the iconic Khasi freedom fighter, U Tirot Sing, in the capital city of Bangladesh, Dhaka.

This initiative is a tribute to the historical legacy of U Tirot Sing and marks a meaningful gesture of remembrance and recognition for his contributions to the cause of freedom.

U Tirot Sing, revered as ‘the Hero of the Khasi Hills,’ boldly opposed British attempts to seize control of the Khasi Hills. Leading a fierce attack against colonial forces on April 8, 1829, he symbolized resistance against British rule.

Unfortunately, he was captured four years later during the Anglo-Khasi War and met his demise in Dhaka Central Jail on July 17, 1835. Meghalaya commemorates his legacy annually on U Tirot Singh Day.
