Shillong, Jan 9: Working President of the Meghalaya State Olympics Association (MSOA), John Kharshiing, on Tuesday informed that the 5th Meghalaya Games 2024 in Tura serves as a ‘trial event’ for the 39th National Games.

Kharshiing informed that the Meghalaya government signed a contract with the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA) in January 2018. According to the terms of the contract, Meghalaya is tasked with hosting the 39th National Games in two locations – one in Shillong City and the other in Tura town.

“So, this Meghalaya Games 2024 is like a trial event to assess the capacity of Tura. It helps identify shortcomings and areas for improvement to be ready for the National Games, which are likely to be held in another two years,” he said.

Highlighting the significance of the event in Tura, he stressed that it is a special preparation for the much larger 39th National Games, indicating the state’s commitment to readiness for the prestigious sports event.

The upcoming Meghalaya Games 2024 is poised to host 23 disciplines, attracting almost 3000 athletes from various districts across the state.

Scheduled to take place from January 15 to 20 in Tura, the fifth edition of the Meghalaya Games promises a diverse array of competitions.

Kharshiing further informed that the event will feature 20 competitive games, two demonstration sports, and traditional games.

These events are set to unfold in various venues across Tura sub-city, adding a dynamic and inclusive dimension to the Meghalaya Games 2024, added Kharshiing.
