Shillong, Aug 13: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday announced the government’s decision to extend financial support to registered street vendors and hawkers in other urban markets in the state through the CM Urban Livelihood Grant Scheme (CMULGS).
The one-time grant of Rs 10,000 was extended to vendors registered with the Hima Mylliem during the programme organized for laying the foundation stone of the second phase Iewduh beautification project here.
Speaking on the occasion, Sangma said the primary objective of the scheme is to provide dignity and support to street vendors, acknowledging the importance of their role in the urban economy.
By providing financial assistance and promoting a supportive environment, the government aims to improve the livelihoods of these vendors.
“It is not really about just the money or just the scheme that we are giving, I think the larger message is about dignity. It is about the fact that the government would like to tell you that what you are doing is also something very important, what you are doing today is you are earning your livelihood for your family and your dignity is there. The message is that the government is with you and standing by you in small ways and in big ways to do and to support you in whatever possible way to enhance your livelihood and take you forward,” the CM stated.
Sangma also announced that the government is planning to extend the program to other urban markets in the state.
“Slowly and steadily as we move further we will incorporate other urban markets. This is for all urban municipal areas around the state. Whenever there are market areas, our idea is to help the street vendors and hawkers and support them in financial ways or whatever way the government can. As we move along I hope that we will be able to help and support you in many other ways in the days to come.”
According to him, the grant will be transferred directly into the vendor’s bank account, ensuring transparency and efficiency.
He said vendors who haven’t registered yet can do so to avail the benefits of the scheme.
The chief minister also assured that the registration process is not meant to regulate the market but to create a system for better management.
