Shillong, May 14: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday flagged off a new fleet of 95 police vehicles worth nearly ₹30 crore to strengthen mobility, operational preparedness and emergency response capabilities across the state.

The flagging-off ceremony was held at the Police Officers’ Mess at Golflink in Shillong in the presence of Director General of Police Idashisha Nongrang, senior government officials and police personnel.

Officials said 79 of the vehicles were procured under the Government of India’s Central Assistance to State Police Scheme, while the new fleet includes Maruti Jimny vehicles, Tata truck troop carriers, Mahindra mini trucks, multiple categories of bus troop carriers and Tata Yodha vehicles for the CID wing.

The induction of the vehicles is expected to significantly improve police mobility, troop movement, law-and-order management and response time in both urban and remote areas of the state.

Addressing the gathering, Sangma described law and order as one of the government’s “most critical responsibilities” and said the state’s commitment to strengthening policing was reflected through sustained investments and reforms.

“With the procurement of nearly 95 vehicles at a cost of approximately ₹30 crore, we are significantly enhancing the operational capabilities of our force,” the Chief Minister said.

He said the government has prioritised police modernisation through infrastructure upgrades, expansion of police presence in sensitive and border areas, and decentralisation of authority to district-level officers for faster implementation of projects.

Sangma also highlighted the recruitment of more than 3,000 personnel into long-vacant posts, saying the move was aimed at improving manpower strength and boosting the effectiveness of the force.
The Chief Minister noted that police infrastructure across the state, including police stations, outposts and border outposts, is being upgraded to ensure stronger law enforcement presence even in remote regions.

“Our goal is to ensure that the presence of our police force is felt not only in Shillong or at headquarters, but across every corner of our state,” he said.

Referring to the recent tensions in Lapangap in West Jaintia Hills linked to the Assam-Meghalaya interstate boundary issue, Sangma commended the Meghalaya Police for maintaining peace and stability through professionalism and restraint.

He also praised DGP Nongrang and the police leadership for their commitment to maintaining law and order in the state.

Officials meanwhile stressed the importance of proper maintenance and effective utilisation of the newly inducted vehicles to ensure long-term improvement in public safety and service delivery.

The programme concluded with the formal flagging off of the fleet by the Chief Minister.
