Manipur Violence Row: Amit Shah to hold press conference today in Imphal

Shillong, June 1: Union Home Minister Amit Shah will address a press conference on Thursday in Manipur’s Imphal on his third day visit to the state.

On Wednesday, Amit Shah visited Moreh and Kangpokpi and held a wide-ranging discussions with civil society organisations and security forces, directing officials to take “stern and prompt actions to prevent violence and recover looted weapons to bring back normalcy at the earliest”.

The direction was given when Home Minister met top officials in Imphal.

From senior officials, he took a briefing on the security situation in Manipur.

Amit Shah took to twitter where he informed that he said “Held a meeting with the delegations of Kuki and other communities at Moreh. They expressed strong support for the government’s initiatives to restore normalcy in Manipur.”

In another Tweet, he said, “Took stock of the security situation with senior officials in Moreh (Manipur)”.

Union Home Minister, is currently on a four-day visit to Manipur till June 1. He also met a delegation of the Kuki Students Organisation, Hill tribal council, Kuki Chiefs Association, Manipuri Muslim council, Gorkha Samaj, Tamil Sangam in Moreh.

Amit Shah also visited a relief camp in Kangpokpi and met the Kuki community members.

He also visited a relief camp in Imphal where the members of the Meitei community are residing.

Amit Shah’s visit was scheduled as five persons including a Manipur Police Officer, were killed, a Bharatiya Janata Party MLA’s house was vandalised and over 1,000 arms and ammunition were reportedly looted by a mob from armories of Manipur Rifles and IRB on Sunday.

On May 3, Manipur faced violence during a rally organized by the All Tribals Students Union (ATSU) to protest the demand for the inclusion of Meitei/Meetei in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category. The march was organised in protest against the demand for inclusion of the state’s Meitei community in the ST category, following an April 19 Manipur High Court directive.
