Imphal, June 18: Curfew has been relaxed in Manipur but it continues in Imphal East and Imphal West.

The notification on the extension of relaxation in curfew timing from 5 am to 5 pm on Sunday was issued by the district magistrates of both Imphal East and Imphal West .

The state of Manipur has been torn apart by violence and ethnic unrest for the past 45 days.

On Sunday, the security agencies were kept on high alert as Manipur is observing Uprising Unity Day in Imphal valley region.

On June 14, 2001, the Union government signed the amended ceasefire agreement with the biggest Naga rebel group NSCN(IM).

The agreement included the words “without territorial limits”. On June 18 same year, a large number of people came out in protest, demanding withdrawal of these three words from the agreement as it was perceived as a threat to territorial integrity of Manipur.

At that time all sections of people came out on the streets. There was arson at many places. The Assembly complex and offices of many political parties were partially burned down.

Residences of certain Ministers, MPs and the Chief Minister’s office were also damaged and singed.

The Uprising Unity Day is observed annually to pay homage and show respect to the 18 individuals who lost their lives during the June 18 agitation in 2001.

The family members who lost their dear ones in the 2001 incidents have appealed to the people of Manipur, of all communities and the government for peace and reconciliation.
