SHILLONG, OCT 14: The East Khasi Hills district administration has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the alleged extortion by police personnel at a check-post, which was exposed in a sting operation by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU).
Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal said on Wednesday that while the police have submitted their report, an independent inquiry is needed to hear all sides.
“We have instituted a magisterial inquiry regarding what has happened, the video which everyone has seen. The SP of East Khasi Hills has already submitted its report. The report from the police is only representing the side from the police,” Baranwal said.

He said a senior Additional District Magistrate has been entrusted with the inquiry.
“I have instituted a magisterial inquiry under one senior ADM, who has been given the responsibility to submit the report latest by 31st of October,” he said.
The DC said the probe will examine statements of complainants, policemen and transporters.
“This magisterial inquiry is going to take statements from the complainants, from both those who have gone to the check-post, and obviously those constables, and maybe from other transporters. Every stakeholder, whoever needs to be summoned and questioned, the magisterial inquiry will ensure that it’s proper and comprehensive, and it brings out the truth as to who is at fault,” Baranwal added.
