SHILLONG, AUG 10: The Khasi Students’ Union, Laban Circle has urged Laban Bengalee Boys’ HS School to introduce Khasi as a subject from the 2027 academic year, calling it a step toward preserving the state’s indigenous language and culture.

In a letter to the principal on Monday, the KSU Laban Circle Education Cell said schools have a key role in keeping local languages alive.

“For the Khasi community, the Khasi language carries generations of knowledge, traditions, values, and cultural heritage. Providing students with an opportunity to study Khasi within the school environment would play an important role in strengthening their connection with their linguistic and cultural roots,” the letter read.

The Union said introducing Khasi would give students a chance to “learn and appreciate the richness of the language” while ensuring it is passed on to future generations.

“We believe that education has an important role in ensuring that indigenous languages continue to be valued,” KSU stated.

The students’ body requested the school to take up the matter and include Khasi in line with academic guidelines from 2027 onwards.

“We deeply value the role of the school in shaping the education and character of young people and believe that such an initiative would be a meaningful contribution towards the preservation and promotion of the Khasi language,” the letter added.
