Shillong, 1 July: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Monday met Cabinet Minister Paul Lyngdoh to raise pressing concerns regarding recruitment and reservation issues at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS).
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, KSU general secretary Donald V Thabah said the discussion focused on unresolved matters following the recent strike at the institute. “We met Bah Paul Lyngdoh today to follow up on the issues we raised with NEIGRIHMS. The Meghalaya government had earlier convened a meeting between the Union and NEIGRIHMS officials, where it was decided that the state government and the institute will jointly consult with the Union Health Ministry,” Thabah stated. He added that further discussions between KSU and the institute are expected to continue.
Thabah informed that the KSU had achieved partial success by securing two additional seats for Scheduled Tribe candidates under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category. However, the Union has insisted that all ongoing recruitment be kept in abeyance until all their demands are addressed. These demands include restoring the upper age limit for posts such as Nursing Officer, enforcing an 80:20 female-to-male ratio in nursing appointments, revising experience certificate criteria, and ensuring recruitment examinations are held locally and in offline mode. The Union has also called for NEIGRIHMS to conduct its own independent recruitment exams and to extend reservation policies to Group B posts.
“Bah Paul has assured us that he will raise these matters with the state Health Minister and NEIGRIHMS Director Dr. Nalin Mehta, and that efforts will be made to arrange a meeting with the Union Health Minister to push for resolution,” Thabah added.
