Shillong, July 24: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has called on the Meghalaya Commercial Truck Owner & Drivers Association (MCTODA) to provide evidence and pinpoint the locations of the alleged 16 check gates, as well as proof that tolls are being collected in the name of the KHADC.
Speaking to media persons on Thursday, KHADC executive member Powell Sohkhlet said, “The truckers association should provide specific information, including the locations of the alleged 16 check gates and evidence that tolls are being collected in the name of the KHADC.”
Sohkhlet assured that the KHADC will take action if the allegations are found to be true, including filing complaints with the relevant authorities.
“But if they (truckers association) are just making allegations without proof, it would be difficult for us to take action on this matter,” he stated.
His statement came after the truckers association had met with the deputy commissioner of Ri Bhoi district, alleging that the KHADC is operating multiple toll gates and collecting tolls from trucks.
Sohkhlet stated that the allegations are baseless because the KHADC operates only three check gates in Ri Bhoi district, which have been in operation for many years.
Referring to the Voice of the People Party (VPP) election manifesto, Sohkhlet emphasized that the party is committed to removing illegal check gates and not the check gates that are legally operated within the jurisdiction of the council.
He however said it is up to the district administration to take action against gates that do not belong to the council.
