Shillong, Dec 22: In a major boost to employment opportunities for young people in Meghalaya, the Jio World Convention Centre (JWCC), Mumbai—one of Asia’s largest convention and hospitality complexes—has hired 20 candidates during its first campus recruitment drive held in Shillong.

The initiative, conducted in collaboration with the Emporium Skills Training Institute (ESTI) and the Don Bosco Youth Centre (DBYC), Laitumkhrah, marks the first time JWCC has recruited directly from Meghalaya, signalling growing corporate interest in the region’s talent pool.

A total of 111 candidates from across the state took part in the selection process. Following three rounds of interviews, 20 were shortlisted and issued offer letters on the spot—an uncommon outcome in first-time campus hiring drives and a morale boost for participants eyeing opportunities in India’s expanding hospitality and events sector.

The selected candidates have been offered competitive salary packages along with accommodation, daily transportation, on-duty meals, medical insurance for themselves and their families, air tickets for joining, and statutory benefits including provident fund and gratuity.

They are scheduled to join JWCC on January 19, 2026, subject to medical and company formalities.

The milestone reflects years of groundwork laid by Don Bosco Youth Centre through sustained mentoring, skills development programmes, and job placement support, especially for underprivileged youth. The centre, a long-standing Salesian institution, has been instrumental in shaping career paths for thousands of young people in Meghalaya.

Earlier this year, DBYC formalised its partnership with ESTI through a Memorandum of Understanding to provide specialised training in aviation, hospitality, and cruise-line services. The programme helped prepare candidates with industry-specific and soft skills, enhancing employability and confidence.

Director Fr Michael Makri described the placements as an emotional moment for the community, saying the initiative represents more than career advancement. “This placement is not just about jobs; it is about dignity, hope, and a future for our young people,” he said.

The centre said more recruitment linkages are likely in the coming months as demand for trained hospitality professionals continues to grow across India.
