SHILLONG, FEB 5: Spokesperson of MDA government and cabinet minister Paul Lyngdoh Monday said there is adequate room for the opposition legislators to address their issues within the four walls of the State Assembly instead of taking their electors to the streets repeatedly.
Speaking to reporters, Lyngdoh said the whole purpose of having an elected House is to facilitate legislators to debate and take part in discussions.
‘Now the electorate has given us a mandate in each of the constituencies whereby a constituency if say 30,000 or 50,000 voters would vote for a particular candidate expecting him to represent their interest in the House on the people,” he said while adding “But if I were to take my electors to the streets repeatedly then the whole point of having elections is defeated.”
Lyngdoh, who is also UDP working president, said that second is members of the opposition are also important members of various committees constituted by the state Assembly.
“Even the public accounts committee which is regarded as a mini Assembly and an Assembly which sits whenever the House does not sit is headed and chaired by a member of the opposition. Therefore, there is adequate room for the opposition to address all their issues within the four walls of the State Assembly and within the confines of the various committees constituted by the House,” he said.
Lyngdoh was commenting on the decision of the VPP legislators to take various issues to the streets. Recently, the VPP legislators had organized a sit-in-demonstration demanding reinstatement of retired officials in the Lokayukta.
