SHILLONG, APR 28: The state government will soon frame rules for implementation of the Meghalaya Official Languages Ordinance, 2026, which grants official status to Khasi and Garo languages alongside English, Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Parliamentary Affairs Prestone Tynsong said on Tuesday.

“Right from MDA government – I and now MDA government 2, we have taken a very important and historic decision in our journey serving the people and one of them recently, we have taken a very good decision meeting the aspiration of the people of the entire state be it Garo and be it Khasi and Jaintia,” Tynsong told reporters.

He said the government opted to term it ‘official’ rather than ‘associate official’.

“Ultimately when we took this decision, we found that yes why associate official and why not official instead of officiate then we ultimately decided that it should be official languages ordinance,” he said.

Tynsong confirmed that the ordinance has received assent and is now law.

“I am so happy to tell you that yesterday, the Governor has approved the Meghalaya Official Languages Ordinance, 2026 and it has been published in the Gazette of Meghalaya and it has come into force and now very soon we are going to prepare the rules of this very ordinance and then ultimately we will also start using these state official languages,” he announced.

Asked about the legislative process, he said: “Yes, the ordinance will come back to the Assembly for regularisation in the month of August-September during the upcoming autumn session of the Assembly.”
