Shillong, June 17: The Hid Foundation Shillong has expressed concern over the current state of education in Meghalaya, citing issues such as teacher shortages, poor learning outcomes and gaps in implementation that continue to affect students, particularly in rural and remote areas.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the organisation acknowledged the efforts of the state government in improving educational infrastructure but said that infrastructure development alone would not be sufficient to address the challenges facing the sector.

According to the foundation, the education system requires stronger policy interventions and timely decisions to bring about meaningful improvements across all levels of learning.

The organisation urged the Government of Meghalaya to take steps to streamline the education system from the grassroots to higher education. It stressed the need to prioritise teacher recruitment, strengthen district-level accountability, improve school quality monitoring and ensure effective implementation of the National Education Policy 2020.

The foundation also recommended the formulation of a comprehensive Meghalaya State Education Policy, arguing that the state requires a framework tailored to its specific challenges and local realities.

It further called for stronger review and monitoring mechanisms, particularly at the district level, to ensure that government schemes and policies are implemented effectively.

The organisation cautioned that without timely intervention and concrete action, many of the existing challenges in the education sector could persist for years.

Describing education as critical to the state’s future, the foundation appealed to the government, parents, citizens and students to work collectively towards improving educational outcomes and strengthening the state’s educational foundation.
