Green Meghalaya: Conrad distributes cheques under Payment for Ecosystem Services Scheme

Shillong, June 6: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Tuesday distributed cheques to community leaders and individuals of Khasi, Jaiñtia & Ri Bhoi Districts under Green Meghalaya or the Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) Scheme.

Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) is a scheme which provisions financial support to villages, communities, clans & individuals for conservation of forests & its natural resources in Meghalaya.

The cheques were distributed as part of the World Environment Day 2023 celebrations in the state.

CM also celebrated World Environment Day in the capital of the state, Shillong with students, along with Dorbar Shnong members and civil societies.

Sangma tweeted “the aim of protecting & saving our environment encompasses small individual efforts to create change. Meghalaya is witnessing a movement joined by the community in taking actionable steps on different levels to restore the serene beauty & cleanliness of our state.”

He further said that “By taking our community along, we are ensuring we are accountable to the sustenance of our Mother Earth & by taking our children along, we are ensuring they imbibe these practices as future custodians of our environment”.

CM said Government is taking active steps in conservation of the environment with initiatives like Save Shillong Rivers Campaign, Payment for Ecosystem Services, Rejuvenation of Rivers, Seed ball and tree plantation drive. These initiatives are being executed together with the community.

He said the government on Tuesday awarded Dorbar Shnong, Civil Societies & Organisations memebers who are involved in cleaning rivers & maintaining cleanliness.

Sangma said they are true role models of our community.
