SHILLONG, FEB 24: Health Minister Wailadmiki Shylla on Tuesday told the Assembly the state has only four anesthesiologists, contributing to a shortage of specialists in hospitals.

“There are shortage of doctors in terms of specialists. At present, we have only four anesthesiologists,” Shylla said.

He said the department has sought recruitment through the Medical Recruitment Board and received finance sanction.

“Very soon we are going to recruit on contractual basis,” he added.

Replying to a question raised by TMC legislator Dr Mizanur Kazi, Shylla said the Bhaitbari Community Health Centre faced specialist shortages, with the gynaecologist posted to Tura MCH due to a non-functional operation theatre.

“There are two medical officers on study leave and…one gynaecologist deployed to Tura MCH…due to non-operationalized OT and non-availability of anesthesiologist,” Shylla said.

“As soon as we get the specialists…we will (also) make the CHC a referral unit,” the minister added, noting the request would be considered in the 16th Finance Commission.

Earlier, Shylla informed that Bhaitbari Community Health Centre handled 1,840 inpatients and 51,242 outpatients in 2025-26, with 868 deliveries.

“Antenatal Care Services: Early Registration of pregnant women within 12 weeks, minimum 4 antenatal check-ups…Screening for High-Risk condition,” Shylla said, listing measures to improve care.

He cited free ultrasound, referral transport under CMSMS, a newborn unit, kangaroo mother care, and post-natal support. Referred cases due to complications rose to 186 in 2025-26, he said.
