Shillong, June 14: Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong has stated that the government has still kept its doors open for peace talks with the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) but it will not be a ‘mere spectator’ to the outfit’s illegal activities.

He was reacting to a question on the alleged extortion activities by the outfit.

Speaking to reporters, Tynsong said that the state government has not received any response from the HNLC despite repeated appeals for resuming the peace talks. He, however, said the government’s door is still open for peace talks if HNLC is ready for resolving issues across the table.

“Yes, the door is still open if they are ready for talks, state government is still opening the door. Not only the state but even the central government,” Tynsong affirmed.

On the alleged involvement of HNLC in serving demand notes to business people, the deputy chief minister said, “Any cases happened like, we are on the job to make sure it does not happen.”

“That is ongoing process, government cannot become a mere spectator. We are on the job to make sure no such illegal note be distributed to anybody,” he assured.
