Shillong, Aug 29: Ahead of the festive season, the Centre slashed the prices of cooking gas by Rs 200 per cylinder for all domestic consumers during the Union cabinet meeting on Tuesday. The approval was given by the Cabinet under the Ujjwala scheme. The additional subsidy is ₹Rs 200. Now the subsidy will be Rs 400 per cylinder for Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) beneficiaries.

This decision comes as a relief to the households, as it will help reduce their monthly expenses on cooking gas.

Currently, a 14.2-kg LPG cylinder costs Rs. 1,103 in New Delhi. It will cost Rs. 903 starting Wednesday.

In the same way, the price will be Rs 703 for Ujjwala beneficiaries after considering the continuing Rs 200 per cylinder subsidy.

Union Minister Anurag Thakur on Tuesday said, “PM Modi has decided a Rs 200 reduction in the price of domestic LPG cylinders for all users. This is a gift from PM Narendra Modi to the women of the country, during the occasion of Raksha Bandhan and Onam”.

Anurag Thakur also said that in 2014, when the BJP first came to power, only 14.5 crore citizens had domestic LPG connections.

Today that number has increased to 33 crore, of which 9.6 crore have been distributed under the Ujjwala scheme,” he said.

He also said that on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan and Onam, the Modi-led government has decided to provide connections to 75 lakh women under the Ujjwala scheme.

Under this, the women will get a gas burner, a cooking gas cylinder, and a pipe for free, Thakur said.

After 75 lakh women get their gas connections, the total beneficiaries of the Ujjwala scheme would then sum up to 10.35 crore.
