Shillong, July 24: Gambegre MLA Mehtab Chandee Sangma has called for a patient and sympathetic hearing of students raising concerns over alleged irregularities in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), saying their grievances deserve attention.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Sangma said she was not the appropriate person to comment on how the Central Government was handling the issue but acknowledged that the concerns raised by students were genuine.
“…but it’s definitely a genuine issue,” she said. “We should have a sympathetic and patient hearing for students across the country because they are part of our society and they are the next generation.”
Responding to questions on whether the purpose of NEET was being undermined, Sangma said the examination was introduced to make admissions more transparent and streamline the allocation of seats.
“The whole reason why NEET was introduced was because placements would become easier and there would be transparency when it comes to the distribution of seats,” she said.
Noting that the current controversy was not an isolated incident, Sangma said there had been similar issues in the past, indicating that systemic shortcomings needed to be addressed.
“It’s not the first incident. There were previous incidents, which means something, somewhere needs to be handled and taken care of. If we can dig deeper and see where we are going wrong, then I think we can handle it more effectively,” she added.
