SHILLONG, AUG 24: A fourth leader of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) was arrested on Monday in connection with the violence during the union’s black-flag bike rally on August 19, a senior police officer said.
Assistant Organizing Secretary Jeremiah Pohthmi was arrested in the morning and produced before the court.
Police sources said he has been remanded to judicial custody.
According to police, Pohthmi is among five masked miscreants identified so far for their alleged involvement in arson and assault incidents, particularly attacks on Assam-registered vehicles.
Presenting a suo motu statement in the Assembly, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said, “Five masked persons have so far been identified as being involved in the August 19 incident, particularly in the attacks on Assam-registered vehicles. One has already been arrested.”
On the progress of the probe, the Chief Minister said, “I don’t have that information with me right now. I will review the situation later today. As I said, we have identified five masked miscreants and action has been taken. Further steps will continue to ensure that all miscreants who led to the situation are brought to justice.”
Earlier, police had arrested three senior KSU leaders – president Raymond Kharjana, vice president Pynkmenlang Sanmiet and general secretary Reuben Najiar – in connection with the same case.
